County Girls' Championship

Alexis Hutton (Falkirk Tryst) with the Strokeplay and Matchplay trophies

The rearranged semi-finals and final of the County Girls' Championship were played at Alloa Golf Club last Saturday.

In the morning semi-finals Alexis Hutton (Falkirk Tryst) beat Jennifer Allan (Glenbervie) by 5&3 and Tiffiny Wood (Glenbervie) beat Ellen Forbes (Falkirk) by 5&4.

In the final, Alexis retained her title by beating Tiffiny by 2 holes.

County Ladies' Captain, Linda Allan, refereed the final and gives the following report:

Tiffiny got off to a good start in the final by winning the first two holes, the 1st being conceded by Alexis and the 2nd with a terrific birdie 4. The third was halved after Alexis three-putted the green however Tiffiny then three-putted the next two holes losing both and the score was back to all square. Tiffiny edged ahead again with a good chip & single putt to par the 6th and go one up and then hit a lovely shot onto the 7th green and 2-putted for another solid par putting pressure on Alexis to hole a 10 feet putt for her par after she had missed the green with her tee shot and her chip ran on past the hole. The toughest hole on the course, the 8th, was won by Tiffiny after an excellent bunker shot onto the green, to put her 2 up but then she encountered another bunker on the 9th and lost the hole to a solid par 5 by Alexis who narrowed the score at the turn to only 1 down.

Tiffiny's 2nd birdie of the day came at the 10th with an excellent 2nd shot to about 12 feet and a confident putt straight into the centre of the hole to go 2 up again. The 11th was halved and then it was Alexis's turn to show off her putting skills on the 12th. By this time the greens were becoming a bit water-logged with the persistent heavy rain and both girls were required to take relief from casual water on the 12th green. This did not deter Alexis who holed a tremendous downhill 20 feet putt for a par 4 and a return to 1 down.

It was clear the match result was going to rest mainly on the putting when Tiffiny once again three-putted on the 13th green and the score was back to all square. Alexis's tee shot at the 14th found a fairway bunker and Tiffiny recovered her composure after losing the last two holes and fired her tee shot right down the middle of the fairway. Alexis played a good long iron shot out of the bunker but Tiffiny was not to be daunted and played a cracking 7-wood shot straight to the back of the green about 8 feet from the pin and calmly two-putted to regain her 1 hole lead.

Despite not reaching the par-3 15th green with her tee shot Alexis levelled the match after Tiffiny missed another putt much to her evident frustration. The 16th hole was halved but not before the Captain had to squeegee the green to clear surface water before the girls could put towards the hole. The long par-5 17th hole saw both girls reach the green in three good shots so the putting was important once again. Unfortunately for Tiffiny she hit her first uphill putt a little too boldly and missed the downhill return and Alexis required only two putts to go 1-up for the first time in the match. Alexis kept her composure on the par-3 18th to put her tee shot onto the green but Tiffiny missed the green long and right and her ball finished behind a tree giving her no direct line to the hole. She was forced to play her second shot sideways before playing her third shot onto the green and Alexis required only two putts to win the hole and the match 2 up.

Both girls played some excellent shots during the match despite the cold and very miserable rainy conditions and both were worthy finalists.

Well done to Alexis Hutton (Falkirk Tryst) who won the strokeplay trophy for the County Girls Championship at Alloa Golf Club on Saturday with an excellent round of 78. Ellen Forbes (Falkirk) won the handicap trophy with a nett 70.

Some of our County Girls have been playing some great golf over the summer!

Alison Goodwin (Glenbervie) and Eilidh Watson (Muckhart - P&K girls) were 3rd representing Forth Valley in the team event at the Scottish Schools Championships at Murrayshall.

Alison Goodwin (Glenbervie) won the Scottish qualifying round of the Faldo Series with rounds of 81 and 72 at the Roxburghe to qualify for the World Final being held at Lough Earne Resort in September.

The next day Alison had the best scratch score in the County Ladies meeting at Glenbervie with a 75.

Alison was selected to play for the Stirling and Clackmannan Ladies' team in the inter-county matches at Royal Musselburgh.

Alexis Hutton (Falkirk Tryst) was runner up in the 15-17 age category at the Janice Moodie Trophy at Windyhill Golf Club with a 83 - 9 = 74.

At the East of Scotland Girls' Summer Meeting and Championship at Haddington Ellen Forbes (Falkirk) won the under 14 handicap prize with a 98 - 25 =73. Alison Goodwin won the under 18 handicap prize with a 80-5=75 and qualified for the matchplay championship. Alison beat Lauren Whyte (St Regulus) by 1 hole in the first round. In the semifinal she beat Gillian Simpson (Murrayfield) by 3&2 before losing by 2&1 to the defending champion Rachel Hanlon (St Regulus).

Catherine Goodwin (Glenbervie) and Andrea Walker (Falkirk) both played in the Scottish Under 14 Girls' Championship at Auchterarder.

Alison and Catherine Goodwin (Glenbervie) and Alexis Hutton (Falkirk Tryst) played in the Scottish Girls Championship at Eyemouth. Alexis was 14th qualifier with rounds of 83 and 82. Alison was 28th qualifier with rounds of 86 and 87. In the matchplay stages Alexis lost her first round match by 2&1 to Katie Reid of Monifieth. Alison beat 5th qualifier Gillian Scanlan (Hamilton) by 3&1 in the first roound before losing by 5&4 to Rachel Polson (Peterculter).

A number of our girls took part in the various Junior Opens making up the Falkirk Festival of Junior Golf.

Alison Goodwin won the Glenbervie Junior Open with a gross 79. Catherine Goodwin won 2nd handicap with a net 71 and Alexis Hutton was 3rd with a net 72.

At the Bonnybridge Junior Open, Tiffiny Wood (Glenbervie) won the girls' section with a net 76 (better inward half) from Catherine Goodwin.

At the Falkirk Junior Open, Tiffiny Wood (86) won the scratch. Nicole Underhill (Falkirk Tryst) was second. Catherine Goodwin won the handicap prize with a nett 69. Jennifer Allan (Glenbervie) was second.

At the Grangemouth Junior Open, Jennifer Allan won the girls' handicap prize with a nett 72. Tiffiny wood was second.

At the Falkirk Tryst Junior Open, Nicole Underhill (Falkirk Tryst) had the best scratch score with a tremendous 82. Catherine Goodwin won the handicap prize with a nett 68.

Catherine Goodwin won first prize in the girls' section in the overall Festival competition (taking best 4 scores out of 5) with Jennifer Allan as runner up.

Alexis, Alison and former county girl, Louise Macgregor (Falkirk) all took part in the Scottish Junior Ladies Open Strokeplay Championship held at Dunfermline Golf Club. Alison was 23rd with rounds of 86, 78 and 75; Louise was 26th with rounds of 79,84,78 and Alexis was 69th with rounds of 89,87,88.

Well done to all the girls for their tremendous performances.

Summer Meeting Result

Six girls took part in this afternoon's SCCLGA Girls' Summer Meeting at Glenbervie. The course was in terrific condition but the windy conditions made scoring difficult.

Best score of the day was a tremendous nett 70 by Ellen Forbes of Falkirk Golf Club.

The CSS was 72.

S&C County girls have been enjoying success in their recent Club Championships.

Twelve year old Catherine Goodwin (Glenbervie) got the ball rolling by winning the Glenbervie Ladies Handicap Championship last Sunday morning. Catherine won her match by 1 hole in an exciting final.

Not to be outdone, big sister Alison follwed this up later in the afternoon by beating County Captain, Linda Allan, by 1 hole to retain her Glenbervie Ladies Scratch Champion title.

A week later eleven year old Andrea Walker of Falkirk Golf Club won the Ladies Handicap Championship.

Former County Girl (and now County Champion) Louise Macgregor also retained her Club Champion title at Falkirk Golf Club.

Girls' Inter-divisional Matches

Alison Goodwin (Glenbervie), Alexis Hutton (Falkirk Tryst) and Tiffiny Wood (Glenbervie) represented the East Girls (pictured right) in the Inter Divisional matches at Ballumbie Castle Golf Club, Dundee on 5th and 6th June.

In their first match against South, Alison and Alexis playing together beat Vicky Wright and Kate Wright by 6&4. Tiffiny played with Shannon McGuire from Fife and they beat Emily Greenlees and Danielle Kerr by 6&5. East beat South by 2 matches to 1.

In the second match against West, Tiffiny and Shannon kept their winning ways beating Jorden Ferrie and Scott by 4&3. Alison and Alexis unfortunately lost by 2&1 to Lesley Cosh and Connie Jaffrey. West beat East by 2 matches to 1.

At the end of the first day all four teams were tied having each won 3 games and lost 3 games.

In the final match against North team captain Alison shuffled the pairings round and in the top game playing with Lauren Whyte from Fife they beat Louise McGillivray and Lauren Duncan by 7&5.

In the second game, Shannen and Tiffiny's unbeaten record finally came to an end losing by 2&1 to Hannah Robb and Eilidh Watson.

In the last game Alexis and Nikki Taylor of Fife were unlucky to lose the last hole to lose by one down.

North beat East by 2 matches to 1.

The final standings were 1. West 5 games won, 2. North 5 games won, 3. East 4games won, 4. South 4 games won. West won overall as they were more holes up than North.

Stirling and Clackmannan girls played a match at Falkirk Golf Club on Sunday against Dunbarton and Argyll girls.

The match was played as two foursomes.

In the first game, Tiffiny Wood (Glenbervie) and Nicole Underhill (Falkirk Tryst) won by 4&2.

In the second game, Catherine Goodwin (Glenbervie) and Ellen Forbes (Falkirk) who were both making their county girls' debut won by 3&1.

Five girls from Stirling and Clackmannan took part in today's East of Scotland Girls' Spring Meeting at Pitreavie Golf Club in Dunfermline.

It was a beautiful sunny day and scores reflected the conditions. The CSS went down one shot to 70.

Tiffiny Wood (Glenbervie) won the under 16 category with a nett 67. Well done!

The best score was a nett 62 by Chloe Goadby of St Regulus. Rachel Watton of Mortonhall had a gross 69.

Strathtyrum Tournament

Alison and Helen Goodwin (both Glenbervie) competed in the Strathtyrum Tournament held at St Andrews last week. After qualifying rounds on the New and Eden courses Helen qualified for the handicap knockout and Alison qualified for the scratch knockout. Helen lost in the 1st round of the handicap tournament to the eventual winner, Rebecca Gammon (Ashford) and Alison lost in the second round of the scratch tournament to the eventual runner up Elaine Clark (Manchester). The tournament was won by East of Scotland Girls' champion Rachel Hanlon of the St Regulus club who birdied the 19th hole in an exciting final.

St Andrews Junior Ladies Open

Well done to Helen Goodwin, Catherine Goodwin (both Glenbervie) and Nicole Underhill (Falkirk Tryst) who qualified for the handicap knockout competition and Alison Goodwin (Glenbervie) who qualified for the scratch knockout competition after 18 holes qualifying on the Strathtyrum course at St Andrews. Catherine was the leading qualifier in the handicap section. Unfortunately all the girls were knocked out inthe first round of the matchplay stages.

Summer Meeting Results

The County Girls' Summer Meeting was held on Tuesday 28th July at Glenbervie Golf Club. It was very windy and the C.S.S. reflected this- Reduction Only. It was also the Daily Telegraph qualifying competition and the winner of "the cap" was Alison Goodwin (Glenbervie) with a gross 86.

Winner: Alexis Hutton (Falkirk Tryst) 87-12=75 (b.i.h.)
Runner-up: Tiffiny Wood (Glenbervie) 90-15=75

Well done to the County girls who played in the Scottish Ladies Junior Open at Nairn over the last few days.

Alexis Hutton (Falkirk Tryst) had the best nett score of the first round in the under 18 category with a nett 71.

Alexis, Alison Goodwin and Jordynn Laird (both Glenbervie) all took something off their handicaps during the competition. Well done.

Scottish Junior Masters

Well done to County Girls Alison and Catherine Goodwin of Glenbervie who qualified for the final of the Dunfermline Building Society Junior Masters tournament which will be played at Gleneagles later in the year.

Alison was the leading girl in the Regional Final played at Alyth today with 43 points. Alison's gross score of 3 over par 74 included 6 birdies - 5 on the last nine holes! Catherine qualified in 7th place with 36 points.

Well done to Alison Goodwin of Glenbervie who qualified for the matchplay stages at the Scottish Girls Championship at Lanark Golf Club. Alison's score of 185 (84+81) made her the 14th of the 32 qualifiers for the Championship matchplay round. She now plays Natasha Qayum of Ranfurly Castle in the first round.

Well done too to Alexis Hutton of Falkirk Tryst who qualified for the Ansley Reid Salver which is the matchplay competition for those in places 33 to 48 of the qualifying rounds. Alexis had rounds of 90 and 89 and plays Heather Munro of Monifieth in the first round.

The Glenbervie Junior Open is being played on Monday 20th July. It is part of the Falkirk Festival of Golf which is being run over the following week.

East of Scotland Girls Summer Meeting and Championship

The East of Scotland Girls Golf Association held their Summer Meeting and Championship at Kingsknowe Golf Club, Edinburgh on Monday and Tuesday this week.

Five Stirling & Clackmannan girls took part.

Alison Goodwin won the under 16's handicap prize with a nett 69 (81 less 12) and younger sister Catherine won the under 14's handicap prize with a nett 80 (115 less 35).

Alison qualified for the matchplay event and lost in the semi-final by 6&4 to the eventual winner Rachel Hanlon of St Regulus, St Andrews.

A new national tournament for juniors has been announced.

The Paul Lawrie Junior Jug competition is open to boys and girls aged under 18 on 1 January 2009. Handicap limits are 28 (boys) and 36 (girls).

There are 7 qualifying competitions being held in July and August and the 4 leading scratch and handicap scores at each of those will qualify for the National Final at Dundonald in September. You can enter as many of the qualifying competitions as you wish - the entry fee is £5 for each competition. The nearest qualifier is at Kingsfield in Linlithgow.

Wee Wonders

The HSBS Wee Wonders competition is open to boys and girls aged up to 12. You don't need a handicap to play in it and qualifying competitions are held around the country in May and June.

Forth Valley Schools

Well done to Helen Goodwin who won the Forth Valley Schools championship which was held at Dunblane New Golf Club today. Helen shot a 85 and won by two shots from Nicola Robertson of Dunblane High. County girl Nicole Undehill won the handicap championship with a nett 70.

Cuthbertson Cup Report

In the morning singles the S&C girls were drawn to play against the holders, Midlothian. Unfortunately, the difference in handicaps showed and Midlothian won by 4 matches to nil. Individual results were:

Gillian Simpson beat Alison Goodwin 2&1
Gabrielle Macdonald beat Alexis Hutton 5&4
Kate Macintosh beat Jordynn Laird 7&6

In the afternoon foursomes the girls lost by 2 games to nil to East Lothian.

Midlothian beat Fife by 3 games to 1 to win the Cuthbertson Cup for the fourth succesive year.

Alexis wins at the Tryst

Alexis Hutton won today's County Girls' Spring medal round her home course of Falkirk Tryst with a nett 69. Obviously a day for the home players as Nicole Underhill was runner up with a nett 73.

Success for SCCLGA Girls at Craigielaw

Stirling and Clackmannan girls rounded off a good week in girls golf with a number picking up prizes at the Scottish Under 16s Open Strokeplay Championship at Craigielaw.

Alison Goodwin (Glenbervie) continued her fine form with scores of 84 and 83 to win the second handicap prize with a nett total of 139. Alison pipped Nicole Underhill (Falkirk Tryst) who also had a nett total of 139 by virtue of the better second round. Nicole was third in the handicap section and also won a prize for the best nett score in the first round by an under 16. Both girls broke their handicaps as a result of their efforts.

Not to be outdone, Alison's younger sister, Catherine, won the skills challenge in the under 12 category.

It's great to see the girls having such a good start to the season after the County winter coaching.

Scottish Under 16 Girls

Good luck to Alison Goodwin and Alexis Hutton who are playing in the Scottish Under 16 Girls Championships at Craigielaw on Thursday and Friday this week.

Fingers crossed too that Nicole Underhill gets a space as she is one of the reserves for the competition.

Success for S&C at Grangemouth

Well done to Alison Goodwin (Glenbervie) who won the overall handicap prize in today's East of Scotland Girls Spring Meeting at Grangemouth Golf Club. Alison's nett 65 (81 - 16) was 5 shots clear of her nearest rival. It was good to see five Stirling & Clackmannan girls playing today.

The best scratch score was a 79 by Kate McIntosh of Broomieknowe.

Match versus Perth & Kinross girls

The County girls match against Perth & Kinross girls at Falkirk Golf Club ended in a draw with each team winning one game. In the top game Helen Goodwin and Jordynn Laird (both Glenbervie) were out of sorts and lost by 9&8 to Eilidh Watson (Muckhart) and Nicola Robertson (Dunblane New). In the second game, Alison Goodwin (Glenbervie) and Alexis Hutton (Falkirk Tryst) beat Emily Aird and Hannah Robb (both Strathmore) by 4&3.

Burntisland Report

The County Girls' team enjoyed a close victory against the County Ladies team at Burntisland Golf House Club in a practice for the forthcoming Cuthbertson Cup. The girls won by 2 1/2 matches to 1/2 in bright but breezy conditions.

Individual match results were:

Helen Goodwin and Jordynn Laird beat Elaine Allison and Louise MacGregor 1up
Alison Goodwin and Alexis Hutton halved with Claire Capocci and Lesley Gibb
Nicole Underhill and Elizabeth Goodwin (girl for the day) beat Shona Gunn and Karen Burns 1up

Thanks to Burntisland Golf House Club for the hospitality today.

The girls are now looking forward to the Cuthbertson Cup on the 19th April.

Flag Competition

There's a flag competition being held at Muckhart Golf Club on Sunday 26th April between 10 am and 2 pm. It's open to girls (and boys) aged 9 to 14. The entry fee is £5 and players get a goody bag and the main prizes are sponsored by Auchterlonies golf shop. It doesn't matter whether you have a handicap or not.

There's also a Fun Challenge for 7 to 10 year olds who aren't ready to take part in the main competition.

Winter Coaching

Tonight was the last night of the Thursday Winter Coaching and I hope all the girls who have attended over the winter have enjoyed themselves. This picture is of the girls who attended tonight. It was great that we had more than 20 girls turning up every week over the 12 weeks and I'm expecting great things from them now that the season's about to start.

Many thanks to Stewart Craig our County Coach and Alan and all the other staff at Forthview Golf Academy, Airth for their help over the winter. The coaching we've managed to give the girls over the last year has been helped tremendously by the lottery funding we received through Awards for All.

We'll be starting the Saturday afternoon coaching at Falkirk Golf Club on 25th April from 3.00 to 4.00 pm. This will be followed by a par 3 competition from 4.00 to 5.00 pm (weather permitting). Future coaching will be held on the last Saturday of each month thereafter until September.

East of Scotland Girls Golfing Association

Membership of the East of Scotland Girls' Golf Association is open to girls who are members of one of the four county associations, East Lothian, Fife, Mid Lothian and Stirling and Clackmannan, that make up the East Division of Scotland.

Competitions are held during the year. There are also matches arranged against the West and South of Scotland girls teams. The first competition is the Spring Meeting which is being held at Grangemouth Golf Club on Monday 6th April.

If you have a handicap of 35 or less and were under 18 on the first of January then you are eligible to join. The annual subscription of £6 for 2009 is now due for those girls wishing to join.

Girls who are members of golf clubs in the Stirling and Clackmannanshire county areas are welcome to come along.
